How to Get Your California RBS Certification

How California RBS works: California RBS certification has official steps run by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). Training must be completed through an ABC-approved training provider. We offer online RBS training for California servers and managers. See the ABC RBS page for the current rules.

Getting California RBS certification is a short official process. You create an account with ABC, complete training from an ABC-approved provider, pass the ABC exam, and then your portal status shows Certified. This page walks through those steps and explains where our online RBS training fits.

Four steps to California RBS certification: portal, ABC-approved training, ABC exam, Certified status

Before you start

Have a working email address ready. You will use it for the ABC RBS Portal and for our course access email. If your employer asked you to get certified, ask them whether they need a copy of your Certified status or certificate details for their records.

Confirm current rules on the ABC RBS page. Rules and fees can change.

Step 1 Register in the ABC RBS Portal

Go to the official ABC RBS Portal and create your account / register for RBS as directed on that site. Public information describes a portal registration fee of about $3.

Keep your login somewhere safe. You will return to the same portal for the exam and to check Certified status. More detail: ABC RBS Portal guide.

Step 2 Complete ABC-approved training

California requires RBS training through an ABC-approved training provider before (or as part of) the path to the ABC exam.

We offer online RBS training for California servers and managers. Course access is about $10. Submit the form on this page and we email payment details. Do not treat any private site as a substitute for ABC's approved-provider rules.

Step 3 Pass the ABC RBS exam

The official exam is taken through the ABC RBS Portal. Public ABC information describes an online exam with 50 questions and a 70% passing score. We do not publish answer keys or "exam dumps." See RBS exam guide.

Step 4 Check Certified status

After you pass, your portal record should show Certified status. Public information describes RBS certification as valid for 3 years. Put a reminder on your calendar before expiry so you can renew in time.

How long it takes

Time varies by person. Many people finish training in a single sitting or over a couple of sessions. The exam is separate inside the portal. Build in time for portal registration and for reading carefully on exam day.

Where our course access fits

Our role is online RBS training / course access at about $10, with payment details sent by email after you request access. ABC still runs the portal, the exam, and Certified status. If you want to confirm any training provider, check the provider information on the ABC RBS pages.

FAQs

Can I skip the ABC portal?

No. Registration, the official exam, and Certified status are handled in ABC systems.

Do I need RBS before my first shift?

Employers and ABC rules set timing. Public information often cites a window for new hires to certify after hire. Ask your manager and check ABC's current guidance.

Is ServSafe Alcohol the same as RBS?

No. California's RBS program is specific to California ABC requirements. Other alcohol certificates do not automatically replace RBS. See who needs RBS.
